MAC Address Generator

How It Works

The MAC Address Generator uses client-side algorithms to create valid MAC addresses according to IEEE 802 standards. When you configure your preferences—such as enabling locally-administered mode, selecting unicast or multicast, choosing your preferred format (colon, hyphen, or plain hexadecimal), and optionally specifying an OUI (Organizationally Unique Identifier) prefix—the tool generates addresses that conform to these specifications.

The generator distinguishes between different address types: unicast addresses have the least significant bit of the first octet set to 0, while multicast addresses set it to 1. Locally-administered addresses set the second least significant bit to 1, making them suitable for private networks and testing environments. The tool handles all these bit manipulations automatically.

All processing happens locally in your browser, ensuring instant generation and complete privacy. You can generate single or multiple addresses at once, making batch creation efficient for network configuration and testing scenarios.

Common Use Cases

  • Virtual Machine Configuration: Generate unique MAC addresses for VMs to prevent conflicts in networked environments
  • Network Testing & Simulation: Create test MAC addresses for network simulation software and security testing
  • DHCP & Network Management: Generate addresses for testing DHCP servers, MAC filtering rules, and network access controls
  • Development & Debugging: Create locally-administered addresses for application development and network protocol testing
  • Device Spoofing & Security Research: Generate addresses for authorized penetration testing and network behavior analysis in controlled environments
